First meeting description and details: Most moral theories - TopicsExpress

First meeting description and details: Most moral theories consider selfishness to be evil, but Ayn Rands philosophy controversially holds selfishness—properly understood—to be the essence of moral virtue (hence her book entitled The Virtue of Selfishness). To get to the bottom of this, we will start with a 12 minute YouTube interview video by Dr. Yaron Brook of the Ayn Rand Institute, in which he gives a basic summary of the Objectivist viewpoint on selfishness: youtube/watch?v=vacOUB0IKVE After the video we will go into an in-depth discussion of this topic, possibly also branching into other aspects of philosophy as we go. This is going to be an informal introductory discussion, so feel free to drop in or out at any time during the meeting. If there are no newcomers at our first meeting, we will instead listen to this lecture: Tara Smith: The Value of Purpose https://estore.aynrand.org/p/182/the-value-of-purpose-mp3-download What: Discussion of the definition and moral status of selfishness When: Friday, January 31st, 5:30 - 7:30 Where: Union South - Wisconsin Idea (2nd Floor) Hope to see you there!
