First of Eight: my translation of 8 Essential Playing Skills as put forth by Pia Nilsson and Lynn Mariott I use the Think Box Play Box construct that my friends Lynn Marriott and Pia Nilsson put forth in their first book Every Shot Must Have a Purpose. In the TB I solve all the mysteries of the shot at hand. What club, what target, what swing, what strategy, and all the things that need to be covered to hit this next shot well. The TB is where the Smart Me gets to be intellectual, where my pre fontal cortex gets to do its CEO of the brain thing. Thinking done. When I move over the ball, when I move into the space, when I move into the 10 seconds or so that it takes me to actually hit the shot and completely different world is formed. It is one of athletic action, of fluid motion, of total play. For me the very best goal in the Play Box is silence. There are no swing thoughts. There are no Oh no moments. The less I actually do in the Play Box the better the shot gets. It is one of the profound mysteries of the game we love but the state of Pure Play is almost the opposite of what we do in practice when we work on our swings. Play versus work: when the moment come I choose play. Play is more fun than work. There are many good coaches who can help you achieve PLAY. If you are climbing the ladder of golf competition I would encourage you to find a coach who can teach you how to PLAY golf. In Vancouver call Toni Taylor. In Omaha call Shelly Liddick. In New Jersey Maura Ballard at Rutgers. In Orlando of course Steven Yellin. In The Apple Kate Tempesta. And in Phoenix Pia Nilsson Lynn Marriott. There are more but these I know get it.
