First of all, I had a great day. Good road trip (only minor traffic and weather issues), good company, fast game (2 ½ hours), Rangers win!! But here is my review of Minute Maid Park in Houston: 1. There was some rain around Houston so the roof was closed. That kept the temperature very pleasant. PASS! 2. Despite the fact it was a day game and there was a lot of light coming in from the big window behind left field, it was relatively dim in the building. Also, with the roof closed, it felt a little hollow and sterile. FAIL! 3. There were probably on about 22,000 - 23,000 fans there and probably 60% of them were Rangers fans. Still, that is no excuse for the organist to play rally music when the Rangers are batting, have men on base and are threatening to score! Twice! FAIL! 4. We were sitting behind home plate in the upper deck. When a fly ball is hit to Left or Center Field, the white ball tends to get lost in the bright window or the white advertising signboards in front of that window! FAIL! 5. The video board is huge and very good except that in the area that displays the line score, they put the runs by inning on top of the graphic showing the inning number, making it difficult to read. Minor annoyance, but PASS! 6. When the PA guy announces “Now batting for the Rangers, Third Baseman #29 Adrian Beltre”, he does it in the exact same smarmy tone of voice as a strip club DJ saying “Now on our main stage…Brittany!” Funny, but FAIL! 7. I have always hated the fact that there is a freaking hill and a flagpole in the freaking field of play! MEGA-FAIL! I do, however, have two suggestions to go along with that tricked-up, cartoonish, miniature-golf approach to the design of the playing field: a. Randomly place several foam bumpers in the outfield that the players have to avoid while playing defense, and b. Randomly place several clowns’ heads in the infield. If you hit the ball into the clown’s mouth, it disappears and then pops up somewhere else on the field!
