First of its kind degree in realty management The RJ College of Art, Science and Commerce in Ghatkopar has become the first college in the country to offer a degree course in real estate management under the Bachelor of Vocational course. Apart from granting permission to offer this course, the University Grant Commission (UGC) has also extended an aid of `1.85 crore from its first academic session itself, which started in October. The degree in real estate management will focus on raising employability of the students and meeting industry’s requirements in professional way. Earlier, in the beginning of the year, UGC had sought proposals for Bachelor of Vocation (B.Voc) course from recognised colleges and universities across the country. The management of RJ College, under the leadership of Dr Rajendra Singh, who is the trustee of the Hindi Vidya Prachar Samiti, has designed the syllabus. The UGC found the design feasible and sanctioned it in May. Though the UGC had granted it permission way back in May, further procedures to get approval of the state and the Mumbai University were completed only by September. “Last year we celebrated the Golden Jubilee year of our college and had decided to do something extraordinary. Luckily, the UGC sought a proposal for a vocational course and as our college has been in the A-grade list of National Assessment and Accreditation Council, we got the approval,” said Mr Singh. “There was no structured graduate programme for real estate and the market was vast, so we conducted a market survey before going to the UGC,” he added. Principal Uma Mukundan said the best part of the course was that it was flexible. “Students can leave the course after one year with a diploma, two years with an advanced diploma and after three years with a degree called Bachelor of Vocation in real estate management.” The syllabus includes real estate industry, legal framework, construction management, human resource, real estate taxation, among others.
