First off let me say Im sorry for being long winded. SO many memories! My Dad, Leonard Hartley (Len) was with Luckys as an Asst Mgr and then Liquor Dept Mgr. I recognize so many names in these posts as Dads coworkers thru the 25+ years. Many that I never met, other than June Booth and Augie Calderone were very close friends of our family, so naturally shop talk was bound to happen. Cant recall the stories but I do remember names when I see them. Just shy of 16 years old, Dad took me to turn in my application at a new store that was opening on Westminster & Magnolia... Luckys #496. I was applying for a box girl position, whoever heard of girls bagging groceries? Amongst the hundreds of people, we ran into Lou Gloyne. He took my app and sent us on our way. The next day Dad comes home from work and tells me to go to the store tomorrow to sign paper work for being hired. Little did I know that job became my second home & family and changed my life. I worked at Luckys for 17 years from 1972-1989. Starting at #496 my all time favorite store! Then I got married to the produce guy and had to transfer, went to the new store in Anaheim Hills, then Anaheim #416? and once again had to transfer due to marriage, to Buena Park 601? I remember wearing the aqua paper thin dresses, the old cash registers in liquor dept, the sliding scale reader, and the tax chart, and also the numbers that were on the numbers in the window that you had to add together to = the tax amount to charge. Then came the new scanners and Scan & Bag. So many great memories! Brent Benson was one of my favorite key holders @ 416, John Spreadberry @ 496 was the most intimidating. That man had my knees shaking!
