First off, let me state that Im aware that several of my good friends here have a very strong opinion on this subject, which is exactly opposite of what my opinion is. I respect their right to their opinion. But I will never, ever, ever, ever be convinced to change mine. Those of you who know me well, know that Im highly passionate about my feelings toward animals and have been a strong advocate my entire life. But Ive got to call a spade a spade in this case, and point out the facts of the numbers, as expressed in the charts below. Just as a wild animal should never be kept as a pet, because of their unpredictable viciousness (or rather, predictable viciousness to act as a wild animal), pit bulls should be phased out as a common pet breed. Im not speaking of any inhumane actions on individual dogs. There are clearly many many individual dogs that wouldnt hurt a fly. I accept and confirm that. But humans simply do not understand the lengths that must be gone to, to properly train this breed to minimize risk of a child being mauled by their pet. Its not the most aggressive dog... Chihuahuas are far more surly. But they are the most deadly, because of their size. At the very least, some sort of certification and advanced training should be mandatory in order to own this breed, just as is required for those who house tigers, lions, etc. And certainly no one with children below a certain age should be allowed to get this certification unless they reach some master level of understanding of this breed. I dont blame the breed. I blame the owners. But the statistics are the bottom line. I wont be debating this with any of you. I simply wanted my opinion known. What prompted this diatribe of mine this evening? Well lets just say you can add one more little girl to the statistics shown below, as of today. There... Ive spoken my mind.
