First report from inside Portugals nostril: Lisbon after dark, at least in the central part of the city, does less than impress. This is the part of the city that was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, and Id always heard it was a Baroque jewel, but Im thinking that perhaps what I read has been a little exaggerated. At least after dark, it looks fairly forlorn, and yes, Im going to use the s word: shabby. But not only was it dark but I was also very tired and grumpy, so Ill withhold judgment for now. The day is bright and sunny, and Ive signed up for two walking tours, so off I go in hopes of a better impression.
