First round, Scott, and already Im cheating! Albeit inadvertently, as in a moment of brain fog I forgot Saint-Émilion is not on the left bank. The good news? I cheated with a 2000 (again, initially I read 2008--long day) La Grange Neuve de Figeac, a fine, fine bottle of wine and totally worthy of an excellent steak. I snagged a couple of ribeyes from the local butcher, quickly seared them and finished with a black pepper and shallot red wine semi-demiglace. I grabbed a new recipe for mock steak frites from the New York Times for the frites, and Im genuinely impressed. Reasonably quick and easy. The frites part of steak-frites is why I dont do it a lot, and this fixes that. Though apparently I ate them without taking a picture (bc I was snacking on them while finishing the sauce), I had green beans tossed in olive oil and herbed de Provence. Also, in honor of the challenge, I eschewed my usual TV/iPhone activity during dinner. I put on a Miles Davis record Ive been meaning to really listen to, and ate a magnificent meal to the amazingness that is Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, et. al. A glorious evening all together, and I owe you thanks for the inspiration. If youll accept my mistaken bank selection, the balls in your court with Challenge: Walla Walla Syrah!
