First temporary school built in quake-hit Ludian, Yunnan Normal life is beginning to return after a devastating #earthquake in China’s #Yunnan Province on August 3. The first temporary school, the Hope Primary School, was completed in Longtoushan Township, Ludian County, on Tuesday, the epicenter of the 6.5-magnitude quake. The original Longtoushan Central Primary School had been badly damaged. The new school, built at the same site, will allow more than 500 local students to go back to class starting September 1. The effort was sponsored by the China Youth Development Foundation and the Yunnan Youth Development Foundation. The makeshift school comes complete with 20 rooms. “There are classrooms, dorms, reading rooms and a canteen”, said Xu Meng, secretary general of the China Youth Development Foundation, which is also funding the construction of two more primary schools in the area. The earthquake that hit Ludian claimed at least 617 lives, injured thousands more, and destroyed 80,000 homes.
