First thing - sign the register! they will NOT come and harvest your organs until theyre sure youre finished with them! Looking at some of the statistics buried in these pages makes depressing reading. There is only a 44% donor rate of eligible donors after brain death and a pathetic 7% donor rate of eligible donors after clinical death. There appears to be a couple of points in the entire process where organs are lost - both seem to be during the administration processes - 5490 potential organ donations out of a starting 35,000 were identified and agreed but only 1340 happened! It also appears that the message is getting to patients families but there are still steps in the clinical procedure that need addressing. Having said all that, lets assume the % success rates stay the same, logically the more donors at the start then the more we get out the other end,so ....SIGN THE REGISTER. This week I know of two young mothers that have lost their lives because of lack of suitable donor organs - both leaving young families under 3y.o.! Imagine this was in your family - would you feel moved to action?
