First thing, Im a Southerner and quite used to Southern accents (including my own);. Last night was the first meeting for this terms course Quantitative Methods, Business Analytics, Management Science (a rose by any other name.....). There are seven students in the class and I think Im the only Southerner. In fact Maine, Connecticut, PA, and NY are all represented (dont know where 2 are from). Anyway the prof is from South Carolina and teaches also at Coastal Carolina U. in Myrtle Beach. I swear this guys accent makes me think Im watching Gone With the Wind. Mind you he has a Phd and 2 Masters Degrees. So I know if it sounded strange to me, those yankees in the class must have been biting their lips to keep from laughing. He was talking about how to set up formulas in Excel and I promise when he said put this or that value in the cell, it sounded like he was saying sale instead of cell (and it had 2 syllables no joke).
