First time I got cat called was by a group of construction workers working on the roof of a building at Oneonta College campus. I was staying there for two weeks on a scholarship for music camp. I was almost 13. No, it did not make me feel validated. It made me feel nervous and icky. When I lived in Manhattan I got cat called everywhere I went. Men would rub up against me in the subways. I had a man follow me at my heels for blocks talking in my ear the whole time till I dodged into Macys to lose him. I had college professors say inappropriate things to me in the hallways at college. None of these things improved my self esteem or made me feel awesome. It made me angry and untrusting of men. This whole story is so disturbing to me on so many levels. Men and women still do not understand or recognize the severity of the issue.
