First time customer came in today asking if we rebuild transmissions and if so could we give him a quote. I asked him why he thought he needed transmission work and to describe the symptoms he was having with the car. He told me the car was jerking when he accelerated and his regular repair shop told him he needed a transmission but they dont perform transmission work. What he described to me did not sound like a transmission problem. I then asked him if they did a diagnosis on the car and he told me they drove the car and concluded it was the transmission. Convinced he needed a transmission, he was now getting quotes from different shops to see who could replace the transmission at the lowest price. I told him I would be doing him a disservice by quoting the transmission work, when what he needed was a formal diagnosis first. He was very hesitant to spend the $55 needed to diagnose the problem to be 100% sure what the problem was. I told him that if we find it is the transmission, I will not charge him anything. If its something else, then it would be money well spent. So he approved the diagnostics. We found the transmission was fine, he had a bad motor mount which was causing the engine to jerk when he hit the gas, making it feel like it was the transmission. So by spending $55 with us for a proper diagnosis, his repair bill was about $600 instead of $4000. This is why its worth paying upfront for diagnostics with a competent repair shop, no different than paying to have an illness diagnosed by a competent doctor.
