First time in years I now got excited about bitcoin as a protocol by seeing what the Bitstream folks (great team) are up to. Sidechains could be huge to improve blockchains and to build services based on the protocol, although there are issues. Definitely read the whitepaper if crypto & good old cypherpunks stuff is of interest. The narrow view of bitcoin as a currency is too limiting. Hope to see some of the things we dreamed of on mid and late 90s idealist cryptoanarchy & cypherpunks mailing lists become a reality during next 10 years.
