First two days of Form and Analysis class (Winter 2015) On the - TopicsExpress

First two days of Form and Analysis class (Winter 2015) On the first day we will explore the principles of structure (per Jean Piaget): Transformation, Self-Regulation, and Wholeness. We will tie these principles to memory--since music analysis depends on the spatialization of remembered sound--and illuminate the principles via Muddy Waterss visceral, hyper-resonant (and semi-taboo) Stuff You Gotta Watch (1951). https://youtube/watch?v=zoJtXWORiuo Its a great distillation of fundamentals. Plus, its irresistible. One the second day we will discuss and illustrate extracts from Arnold Schoenbergs Laws of Comprehensibility, readable for free here: books.google/books?id=YPaNsgtkEo0C&pg=PR8&lpg=PR8&dq=schoenberg+laws+of+comprehensibility&source=bl&ots=MCjn5Ar_fr&sig=ZFndeR3j72VtkgMbWmlB4RVpUb4&hl=en&sa=X&ei=Hd14VLDPHo6zoQS_uoGoDg&ved=0CDAQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q=schoenberg%20laws%20of%20comprehensibility&f=false (If I were Alanis Morissette, I would say/sing: Thank you Google / Thank you Youtube / Thank you Faculty Tenure.)
