First we had Boris Bikes now Boris Cars march on London. Following a successful roll-out in Paris and other French cities, electric car-shares are on the move as close cousins to bike share schemes. Theres an interesting synergy evolving. According to the MD of Autolib, “The main aim was to cut air pollution and reduce the load conventional cars place on the city, but still give people an easy option to use a car when they really need one. I think we’re making progress.” Reducing car ownership costs fits well with many urban dwellers and has its own environmental impact advantages. GoGet is Australias leading car share company but has yet to reveal plans for electric vehicles. It has however expressed interest in self-drive cars that will chauffeur occupants to their destinations. In Helsinki, the plans are now to fully integrate all forms of transport under one access card - taxi, public transport, bike or car sharing - to make mobility flexible and adaptable. Seriously, how great would that be? According to Forbes, In China, though, everything is bigger. A company called Kandi Technologies plans on making 100,000 cars available to the residents of Hangzhou for hourly rental over the next couple of years. The cars are stored in special garages and dispensed like a vending machine at the kerb. The implications are clear, if we can reduce the need to make every journey by car but make a car available when needed, we can save billions on roads and offer even better solutions that make cycling, walking or public transport more attractive.
