First weekend of the season is in the books, with the Empire team winning twice and the Elite team dropping a pair against the Florida Eels. On Saturday, the Empire team won 3-2. Trey Stern, Kastle Birch and Marty Friedrich scored goals, Dan Bianco made 38 saves. Tampa Bay was 2-for-3 on the power play and 3-of-4 on the penalty kill. On Sunday, the Empire team won in overtime, 4-3. Drake Stimpson scored twice, Liam McCune once, with Connor Smith scoring the overtime winner. Jake Cuthbertson made 30 saves for the Juniors, who went 0-for-2 on the power play and a perfect 8-of-8 on the penalty kill. On Saturday, the Elite team dropped a 7-5 decision to the Eels. Tommy Whiteley, Nick Reed and Paul Lochner scored once each, while Richard Foy scored twice. George McLeod made 32 saves for the Juniors, who were 1-for-5 on the power play and 5-of-6 on the penalty kill with a short handed goal. On Sunday, it was the Eels winning 5-1. Nick Reed scored the only goal for Tampa Bay, while George McLeod made 33 saves. Tampa Bay was 0-for-5 on the power play and 6-of-7 on the penalty kill. Next Saturday, the Empire team plays Florida Gulf Coast University at 5:15pm. The Elite team plays the Palm Beach Hawks at 8:00pm Saturday and 12:15pm on Sunday. All games will be available for viewing on fasthockey, with the Voice of the Juniors, John Meissner, calling the action.
