Firstly, massive thanks and more thanks to everybody who has donated, promoted the fund raiser and helped to bring in new supporters. Your all amazing and thanks to you we have changed another little life. Most of you will remember Little Jack the handsome Cockateil who Loz Harrison picked up as he was being given way for free on a site. Jack came in a filthy cage, with a rusty bell his only toy, a bowl full of mouldy sunflower seed and green water. There was an obvious problem with Jacks wings in the way they were positioned and although we expected some health issues due to his environment, we were shocked at the vet findings at Jacks appointment today. The shoulder bone at the top of one of Jacks wings has basically been eaten away by either untreated infection, a deficiency or an old fracture/trauma. This is an old and obviously unrepairable issue which cannot be fixed. His liver is very enlarged possibly due to poor diet but the worry is that it could also be due to psittacosis. Jacks x-rays also show to the alarm of his AV gritty metal like deposits sitting in his abdomen. Which leave us with obvious concerns as well as the concern of either lead or zinc poisoning. Jack has had a series of x-rays, blood and feather samples taken for testing for psittacosis, liver profile, heavy metal poisoning and the AV has also advised testing for Bonovirus. All of this plus the costs of sending samples for Haematology and Biochemistry profile has come at a cost of £249.45. Shortly after returning home with Loz, Little Jack began to bleed from both nares and we feared we would loose him. Fortunately as Loz was on the phone to the vet to forewarn him of Jacks return the bleeding slowed and stopped. This little fella certainly does like to keep us our toes !! I realise several of our donators have sent in donations following the post about the 2 timnehs clearly in need of a good home and I apologise that this will now have to be put to one side. The funds were not quite at £300 prior to Jacks vet bill today so although still not near the £550 needed for the timnehs, to raise that from scratch now would be near impossible but I hope you agree that Jack now being in our care deserves every single chance we can give him. This little fella must have been in awful pain for a very long time, particularly as that shoulder bone crumbled or got so infected it has been eaten by infection. Though I know what you will all say, if anyone donated in the hope of bringing the timnehs into safety feels they would like their donation returned, please let me know and I will refund back to you. Below are Jacks x-rays. You will see the loss of bone structure on his right (our left) shoulder joint and though Im unsure of what Im seeing in the others, I think the 2nd shows the white specs in the abdomen which are the metal deposits.
