Fischerstechen (Fishermen’s Jousting Contest) 14th and 21st July 2013 The jousting contest is a real tournament on the Danube with 16 jousting pairs in historic costumes representing historical figures and original characters of Ulm. Thus on a Sunday afternoon you may see the Ulm Sparrow and the Tailor of Ulm, the Farmer and the Farmer’s Wife, the White Fishermen, the Pair of Jesters, Türkish Louis and the Grand Vizier competing with each other. The protagonists are carried from each of the opposing banks by boatmen in barges called Zilles, narrow boats about 10 metres long. The winner is the jouster still upright at the end of the duel. On each of the festival Sundays, the spectacle attracts tens of thousands of spectators to both banks of the Danube and onto the Danube Bridges. The day begins, however, with colourful processions through the town and the performance of the Fishermen’s Dance at various locations: the pair of jesters and the farmer and his wife –incidentally, the lady is always played by a man- dance to the music consisting exclusively of drums.
