Fish Fight New Zealand is modelled on the UK & EU program run - TopicsExpress

Fish Fight New Zealand is modelled on the UK & EU program run successfully by chef and presenter Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall of River Cottage fame. Fish Fight has campaigned to change to the way fish is caught, sold and consumed in the UK and across Europe as well as around the world. It has engaged hundreds of thousands of people and has successfully changed policies, practices and attitudes. The campaign ended when they overturned the discard laws that were in place at the EU parliament. We intend to mobilise support the same way as Hugh did and address exactly the same problem. The aims are: 1/. To cause a law change that will require all commercial fishermen to land everything they catch; 2/. To cause a law change that will create a new type of Marine conservation areas modelled on the UK’s where no commercial fishing is allowed but Recreational fishing is allowed; 3/. Bring to the public attention the destructive practices of bottom trawling (in all its forms fish/shellfish etc) and its impact on the destruction of fragile seabed structures and reef areas. To do this we will: 1/. Set up a website - we have fishfight.co.nz and fishfight.org.nz 2/. Start a petition against senseless waste 3/. Create a protest situation where the “people” can join in. 4/. Publicise it worldwide which will put real pressure on the NZ Government and Comms operators. 5/. Start an email and social media campaign which will target MP’s of all colours 6/. Enrol celebrity chefs and celebrities in general in NZ to act as front people for the campaign as they did in UK. 7/. Use celebrity chefs to educate the public on how to prep /use and way of cooking of the fish which comms discard. 8/. Target all supermarkets and fish seller (including all fish & chip shop) with education material and get them to change their ways and practices, including getting the “people” to write to them with same message. 9/. Get all forms of the press involved either directly or via articles using the celebrity chefs etc. 10/. This is a one off project which we will raise money for via sponsorship, any funds left over at completion will be donated to Legasea. You cannot conserve fish stocks by throwing dead fish back into the sea! Stephen Fry Said “The Fish Fight is Important. Dammed Important. It is so fantastically easy for us to make a difference by doing a small something and so appallingly easy for us to be complicit in a complete disaster by doing a big nothing. So what’s it to be then?” Links to see video and background which we will use are: fishfight.net/ youtube/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=PZDe_ghyReQ youtube/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=nkfz5fOPSck youtube/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=ScGUHhhH7rY
