Fishing Report Is this spring already? It certainly feels like it! Water temperature is still a lot higher than normal. Patches of krill showing up is a sure sign. The fishing has continued to improve with plenty of large tarakihi coming on board to the delight of the keen anglers that have been out this week. Snapper fishing in 80+ metres has been producing some fat 35 cm fish. There have been lots of snapper around the 27 cm mark and plenty of undersized to release. There are lots of rat kingis around but none big enough to keep. There have been runs of good fishing from the high tide down to the low tide. Some days right on the turn of the low tide the fishing for tarakihi, has been excellent. They have all been caught on the bottom hook of the ledger rig indicating the importance of having your hooks either laying on the bottom, or very close to it. Best bait has been squid cut into matchstick sized strips, looking similar to a small bait fish. Kahawai have been randomly feeding on whitebait on the surface. Most unusual catch this week was a frost fish caught by Jamie Wilkie from Edinburgh, Scotland. By far the biggest fish he has ever caught, he initially thought he had a barracouta. Although unrelated, they do look similar with long sharp teeth, no scales and silver in colour. They are midwater hunters targeting squid and baitfish. It is rare to catch one. The frostfish is excellent to eat having a fine, delicate flesh. You can fillet them but it is easier to cut them into sections and cook them in butter in the frying pan. Jamie cooked his and declared it to be delicious. You have no doubt heard about the proposed cuts to the recreational snapper bag limits.
