Fishing Report: This will be an interesting transition period, as we go from summers high temps to fall temperatures with dropping water temps and changing colors. Many angler enjoy the fall fishing more than any other time of year. Water levels remain good, much better than last year at this time. We have had just enough rain to make a difference, which is certainly good news for anglers. You will notice the beginning of fall colors as you drive around. The roadside ferns are turning brown and the maples are starting their changes. Water temps are again on the decline and will soon be heading towards the low 60’s and even 50’s. We hope for a consistent decline into those 50’s and for a lack of warm fronts passing through again. Walleye fishing still remains on the slow side. Basically, they should be moving back on those deeper weed edges as the water temperatures cool down. Jigs and minnows will be the best bait for them. On the deeper lakes we have seen some improvement in the daytime fishing, but on all lakes the evening and night fishing is still best time. Some anglers are still using half of a night crawler along the weed edges on the lakes on the weed edges in the 12’ range. Look for better daytime action as the water temps decline this month. Bass action continues to be spotty, with smallmouth and largemouth being caught mixed together in the 10’ range on lakes that contain both types of fish. Plastics fished right on the bottom have been very effective for both fish. Some good size largemouth have been reported caught in the weeds using weedless topwater and spinner/ buzzbaits. Musky action has shown some improvement this week and should only get better with the dropping water temps. These fish will be more active in the weeds during the month of September during the daytime than they have been. This combination of weeds and cooler weather should begin to produce good numbers and a chance of a trophy during the fall fishing. Larger bucktails have been effective as have surface baits. This is also a time to start using suckers on rigs. Panfish action remains good, with bluegills continuing to hit in the shallow to mid-range weeds. Wax worms or leaf worms are working best for these fish. Crappies continue to be schooled up and if you can find them will provide great action on minnows. Look for the deeper deep weed edges to hold them. Perch have moved somewhat deeper lately and minnows and leaf worms are best for these.
