Fishing Report What a fantastic change in the weather - TopicsExpress

Fishing Report What a fantastic change in the weather conditions since Christmas! Even better that it has coincided with summer holidays for most people. It has been a pleasure to be out at sea in such calm conditions. The fishing has been generally slow inshore, slow but steady on some days and nothing but slow on others. Perseverance, having good marks to go to and knowing how to position the boat over the marks makes the difference. There will be a bite time during the day and patience usually pays off. Having good bait helps. Tarakihi find pipis and tuatuas irresistible. There are plenty available on the beach at low tide. Squid and pilchards are also a good bait option. There are large schools of sweep or grey maomao and also small snapper inshore and these fish are real bait thieves. Burley can improve the snapper fishing. Close to home, the main catches have been tarakihi, large blue cod, John Dory, undersized kingfish, kahawai, trevally, porae and a few takeable snapper. There are lots of sharks back including makos, bronze whalers and blues. Water temperature is up to 20-21 celsius. On a couple of recent trips to Tuhua the reef fishing was excellent, with catches of good sized tarakihi, pink mao mao, trevally, porae ((up to four kg) and lots of snapper ranging in size from 35 to 65 cm. Hapuka and bluenose fishing last Sunday was very productive after a slow start. After several hours fishing with no result, suddenly there was a hook up and Ewen Abernethy caught the biggest fish of the day which was a bluenose of about 20 kg. A bass and a small bluenose came up on the same drift. After a move to a different area, the next drift proved very productive with everyone on board hooked up to big fish, mainly bluenose and bass. It is hard work winding up from 350-425 metres and we are finding the electric reels are becoming quite popular, especially for older folk. Ewen was very pleased to have the opportunity to use one as he had hurt his arm in a recent accident and would have had great difficulty winding up a fish of that size from such a depth.
