Fit & Bendy Tip of the Day: Improving your back flexibility... Often we think of stretching the back as just back bending since that is what is often needed for the fancy tricks. However a happy, healthy spine also wants to be flexible going side to side, twisting, and bending forward. Try incorporating rotation, lateral stretching, and forward flexion into your warm-up before your backbend. These movements will help to loosen up the muscles on either side of the spine, relax your back, and prevent injury or muscle cramping when you are back bending. Make sure that you are not just focused on the lower back, but also include the upper back in the movement. Also be sure that when you are forward bending you arent just bending in the hips and stretching the hamstrings. The spine should be rounded and the tailbone tucked to really lengthen through the lower back. Doing this before and after back bending will make your back happier and ultimately increase your back bending ability. Happy bending!
