Fitness Fact Friday-2/21/14 Rest Rest is just as important as working out. Believe it or not, when you exercise you are breaking your muscles down. That soreness you feel several days later is actually microscopic tears in your muscle most commonly known as Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness or DOMS. When you rest, your body is actually growing. Growth!!! Everybody loves growth right?! Your muscle is growing to adjust to the stimulus that you have put it under while working out.The human body is one giant survival mechanism so depending on the training, growth can be in size (hypertrophy), endurance, and/or strength to be better prepared for the next time it undergoes that type of stress, or in this case, the exercise. Rest includes nutrition, sleep, and anything that helps put the proper nutrients into your body to aid in the recovery. Over training happens when you over work yourself without proper rest and food. So when exercising keep in mind that rest is key to progress and performance. So what doesnt kill you makes you stronger, right?! Enjoy!
