Fitness Improves Mood in Middle School Students, Especially for Girls Middle school is a critical time in children’s’ physical and mental development. It is during this period when some children’s’ fitness levels drop off, weight begins to increase, and signs of mental problems become evident. Girls are more likely to have depression in middle school, and researchers found that those who were less fit were more likely to be depressed. The same link was true for boys, but not as strong. Past research has only looked at the link of physical activity instead of cardiorespiratory fitness, which has yielded conflicting results, but this new research finds a correlation between heart and lung health and depression which may work both ways, meaning depression can also decrease fitness levels. Still, researchers are confident that although being fit is not a cure, it is a beneficial factor in improving mood in middle school children. For more information, visit ow.ly/AaWst
