Fitness Tip: This is an important tip as far as safety is concerned, especially in Long Beach this summer with a vacant boardwalk. I have alluded to this concept in a previous tip; however with the season upon us it is imperative to reinforce the road etiquette. When running, run on the left side of the road traveling against the flow of traffic. When biking, bike on the right side of the road flowing with traffic. Oh and cars, please stop/slow down! Fitness Tip: Power. Power is not always indicated by the size of a muscular unit; it is far more indicative of the ability of the nervous system to transfer force between neurons. Incorporate power movements into your workout regimen. However, as always, slow down the time between repetitions in order to reset your body into neutral position to reinitiate the systematic and appropriate transfer of energy. Also, forcefully exhale on the exertion phase of the movement. It will transfer oxygen to your muscles when needed at the most critical phase of energy metabolism. Fitness Tip: Have the patience to work on your flexibility. Physical activity, in virtually any capacity, creates micro tears within your muscle fibers. This is also when your blood pools amino acids (building blocks of protein) and creates hypertrophy (fortifying muscle fibers). The more elasticity your muscles, joints, and ligaments have; the more micro the tears.
