Fitness Tip: We Cant Forget about Eccentric Contractions We do - TopicsExpress

Fitness Tip: We Cant Forget about Eccentric Contractions We do activities everyday that utilize concentric and eccentric actions. When you are running, for example, your quadriceps propel you forward with a concentric action while the hamstrings brake your forward motion. This applies to other exercises such as performing a leg extension. We use a concentric contraction when we are pushing the weight up, whereas on the way down we use an eccentric contraction. Many of us focus only on the concentric phase and lower weights quickly or let them drop. Other examples include lowering a dumbbell during a bicep curl or performing a calf raise on a stair ledge. What we need to remember is that the eccentric phase or the lowering phase is equally important and can help maximize strength gain. It also helps improve balance, mobility, and lowering objects to the ground. Have a great weekend! Kolby Henke Fitness Specialist [email protected]
