Fitness for Women 40+ ~ After the age of 40, daily exercise is nonnegotiable part of your life. ~ If you want to be healthy, you MUST exercise 30-45 minutes 5-6 times a week. ~ Lift some weights! You must LIFT some weight to LOSE the weight! ~ Sometimes focusing on certain cardio only activities can actually REDUCE your ability to lose weight. For instance, running raises cortisol levels. ~ For every pound of muscle we lose (though crash dieting, aging, or inactivity) we LOSE the ability to burn up to 50 calories a day. However, 8-12 weeks of progressive weight training can increase muscle mass in women over 50 (even as old at 90) substantially. ~ Interval training is a better choice than lots and lots of cardio (and it is more effective).
