Fitness tip #543 (ha ha, like I count them!): Warning, this is lengthy and is not intended to upset anyone selling any products, its about educating you so that you do not become 1 of the millions who yo-yo diet. Here goes: The American College of Sports Medicine states that IF you lose MORE than 2 pounds per week, your body uses lean mass for fuel. What this means for those of you who get excited about the scale dropping faster than my 401k balance, once off of your challenge, diet, cleanse and if youve lost MORE than 2 pounds in 7 days, you have now compromised your RESTING METABOLISM. Still dont care? Sarcopenia (loss of muscle, which happens normally with aging but happens more rapidly with smokers, those who diet and those who do not weight train) can be serious. Loss of muscle can lead to type 2 diabetes and/or osteoporosis (loss of bone mass). Still not convinced that a crash diet can have ill consequences? Well, how about when you come off of your challenge, you have the odds against you and will probably gain all of your weight back (and more!!) because you have now slowed down your BMR (resting metabolism). You will think you gained weight because you lack willpower. This is why the diet industry is a multi-billion (billion, with a B, folks) industry. Again, this is not meant to upset my friends selling products, but hopefully, those friends will now be informed so they do not harm their customers (I have AWESOME friends who I know dont want to negatively effect their customers health). Make sure you do not fall under 1200 calories a day. Exercise most days of the week. Eat your fruits and veggies like your momma taught you (please dont put cheese on your broccoli either!!) . There is NO quick fix, so stop trying to find one. In order to lose weight for good, you will have to sweat, you will have to grocery shop, you will have to cook and you will have to fit in activity EVERYWHERE IN YOUR LIFE. Think of this as a public service message. BTW, I have never, ever backed off of this message. Ive seen trends come and go in the diet, fitness and health industries. Most of them cause me to shake my head. But when I scroll through my newsfeed and see people dropping crazy weight, as a health educator, I have to inform. Now you know, choose wisely my friends :)
