Five Cars Every College Student Should Consider You just got your license, and you’ve applied for the college and course you want to continue on to – so, what’s next? Buying the right car, that’s what! We’re listing out five different cars that we think you should consider getting before you head on over to your first lecture. Of course, we couldn’t list down every car we liked, so we picked our five favourite ones, for various different reasons, and listed them out for you below. 1. 2013 Ford Fiesta (Prices To Be Announced – Estimate RM86,888) The 2013 Ford Fiesta comes with a range of cool features, looks like a great little car, and comes with a feisty 1.5-litres Ti-VCT engine. This B-segmenter is a sporty option that looks great and drives really well. It will definitely turn heads with its sporty exterior and oh-so-spacious interior. It’s 1.5-litre engine and dual-clutch six-speed PowerShift transmission makes shifting up with speed completely effortless: Smooth, barely noticeable and just plain quick. To top off the cool features, you also get a keyless entry system, a push-start button, and a neat rear parking aid with park pilot system. 2. 2013 Toyota Vios (Prices To Be Announced) Timeless, simple, and reliable: Three words to describe what the all-new 2013 Toyota Vios has to offer you. We know the Toyota Vios to be a tried and tested car for years now, and the latest model carries on many of the previous car’s strengths – like its engine and transmission – and takes on a huge styling improvement. When you’re in college, the last thing you want to deal with is car breakdowns and we can safely say that Toyota has gotten the formula for the Vios to nearly perfect. It may be a basic formula, but it works, and will never fail on you, unless you neglect it. Being as timeless as it is, the Toyota Vios is the perfect car to transition you from college classes to the work place, and still fit in so well. Another important factor about getting the right car in college is making sure there’s enough space for just about anything. Your files, lecture books and even your gym bag for after-class sports, perhaps? You’ll find all the space you need in this sedan. 3. 2013 Kia Picanto (Prices To Be Announced - Estimate: RM 55k – RM64k) The all-new 2013 Kia Picanto is a car that is absolutely good value for money. It is equipped with amazing features, reasonable comfort, and it comes in two different variants, both of which features a 1.2-litre engine (one five-speed manual and one four-speed auto). It’s small, it’s cute and its safety features are amazing; LED daytime running lights, 15-inch alloys, ISOFIX seats, 6 airbags, ESC and rear discs and on top of that, Bluetooth and Aux capabilities are available for audio streaming… need we say more? The 2013 Kia Picanto will officially launch in Malaysia at the end of October, along with its superbly attractive prices. 4. 2013 Nissan Leaf (Prices To Be Announced) Okay, so we don’t have this car in Malaysia yet, but it’s coming. We don’t know just how much it will cost either, but we can tell you that it won’t be cheap. However, it has a rather unique selling point about it that you might want to consider. As a college student, the price of petrol is downer on your week’s spending. With the Nissan Leaf, you could technically get away without paying for petrol, ever again! The Nissan Leaf has a full-charge range of 160km, so as long as you keep your daily driving within that, and remember to charge it overnight, you will never have to fork out another penny for fuel – and you’ll be doing our depleting fossil fuels a favour. The only two problems with the Leaf are, for one, it will be expensive – but the initial cost will be balanced out by you never paying for petrol again. And secondly, it does look a bit weird. 5. 2013 Honda CR-Z Hybrid (Priced From: RM119,000) If all you want is a fast car that looks cool, you can’t go wrong with the new Honda CR-Z. The two-seater hatch is a very affordable sports car, and has loads of young and trendy features for you to relish, like a Sport+ button that unleashes the full charge of the battery for maximum acceleration – think of it as a NOS boost! There’s also a large boot in this little Honda, and it comes with loads of style for you to keep up your cool in college. The Honourable Mention: The Perodua Myvi (Prices From RM44,923) The Perodua Myvi didn’t make our list above because it’s a bit too popular and familiar for our liking. Even still, it’s been Malaysia’s best-selling car for how many years now? You can’t deny the success of the Myvi, and all its affordable goodness. It’s spacious, it’s practical, and it’s affordable; so for when all else fails, you can turn to the Perodua Myvi.
