## Five Chicks # Made by Stephen McIntosh # Made with Irish 1 pingin coin (1943) and copper wire # $36 with chain (#5338) This piece is named Five Chicks because the coin pictures 5 baby chicks under the mother hen (under a few are under her leg). The coin was designed by English artist Percy Metcalfe in 1928. This is interesting given that this was the first coinage of the Irish Free State, a former holding of the British Crown. The coin is no longer in use, as of 1971. The piece is reversible and has the year and the gaelic harp (cláirseach) used in the Irish coat of arms and associated with the nobility on the reverse side. Ireland is a wonderful and beautiful place. Rachel and I (Stephen) visited in 2010 with her parents. Other than some stress driving on the right-hand side and a blown tire on the M7, it was a perfectly wonderful time. We saw gardens, a giant rabbit, a china factory, castles, watched the World Cup soccer match in a pub with a group of French students, had great Indian food, and explored the countryside.
