Five gorgeous convertibles to cruise around in this summer Let the wind blow back your barnet as you tear round town in one of these drop top motors As the heatwave continues, you may have realised that this is the one fortnight of the year when owning a convertible in the UK makes perfect sense. So quickly, before the summer ends in six weeks of dreary downpours, get down to your local dealership and pick up one of these drop top lovelies. Failing that, you could always start saving up for Honda’s 130mph mower… JAGUAR F-TYPE (FROM £58,520) Possibly 2013’s most anticipated new sports car, the F-Type is a thing of true beauty, inspired by the classic E-Type but in every way a modern piece of engineering and design – the car features a Dynamic Mode which, when you tap a button on the 8in touchscreen, sharpens up its senses, delivering a far sportier performance. All F-Types feature an eight-speed automatic gearbox and rear wheel drive, and the standard model rocks a 3.0-litre V6 with 335bhp. CITROEN DS3 CABRIO (FROM £15,045) OK, so technically speaking the DS3 Cabrio isn’t a true convertible. Rather it has a fabric roof that can be folded back in the centre; it’s basically a giant sunroof that can be opened electronically while you’re traveling at up to 74mph (not that you’d, you know, ever be driving that fast on British roads). It’s a lightweight, efficient car too, delivering low CO2 emissions of as little as 99g per kilometre. And it’s more affordable than any of the other new cars here. LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR ROADSTER (FROM £294,665) Should money be no object, what could be more ostentatious than a Lambo? The Aventador Roadster features a removable, two-piece carbon fibre roof that weighs less than 12kg – which is relevant because you have to manually lift it off yourself. That may seem a bit much for a car that’ll set you back almost £300,000, but once you put your foot down and hear that 6.0-litre 700bhp Italian V12 roar, your mind will probably be on other things… VOLKSWAGEN GOLF R CABRIOLET (FROM £38,770) Shelling out almost forty grand for a Golf may seem somewhat absurd, and the thought of the depreciation makes us shudder, but there’s something uniquely appealing about a soft-top version of the quintessential hot hatchback. The quickest convertible Golf on the market, the R Cabriolet sports a 2.0-litre turbo engine. MG MGB ROADSTER (£VARIES) If you’re in the market for something a little more classic and characterful, the British icon that is the little MGB Roadster is hard to beat – and likely to be very easy on the wallet in comparison to the above motors. The Roadster was produced between 1962 and 1980 and comes in original, Mark II and Mark III versions.
