Five reasons why legal immigration to our country is good: 1) There is a mismatch between the pool of available Americans and the jobs that need to be done in our country. That mismatch is concentrated at both ends of the education and income scale. Crucial jobs could not be done without foreign workers; 2) Our welcoming foreign job-seekers is reciprocated by other countries welcoming American job-seekers. In fact more Americans work abroad legally than foreigners work legally in this country; 3) Americans working abroad are sometimes very good (if informal) representatives of country; they radiate our values and our culture in ways that we could never hire enough diplomats to do. If America closed its doors to legal immigration, other countries would close their doors to Americans as well; 4) You and I and almost all our fellow citizens are vastly richer, healthier, better fed, better entertained, and better educated because we have foreigners working legally in our country; 5) Almost all of us are either foreign born ourselves or are the descendants of foreigners who came to this country. We would have to have no sense of history to say it was good our ancestors to come to this country and say it is bad for others to do the same thing now.
