Five weeks ago our lives changed as I never imagined... Our cherished 7 year old English chocolate Lab, Hallie Bear, was diagnosed with SARDS by a veterinary opthamologist . Like most stories shared here and on other pages, we were told there was nothing that could be done, she would adapt to being blind, and live a long, healthy life. It was recommended I purchase the book Living with Blind Dogs (which I have found to be a great resource.) Good bye and good luck. Enter internet research: the good, the bad, and the ugly :{ After reading pet parents stories for countless hours (and using countless tissues) I became determined NOT to accept adapt and do nothing, but to give our fur baby the best treatment care I could find. So I picked up my warrior shield and prepared to battle the enemy SARDS! I immediately eliminated all processed foods and changed her diet to homemade focusing on Chinese medicine neutral and cool foods. Hallie receives acupuncture and Ive incorporated the herbs recommend in the book and followed the suggestions for helping a dog adjust to loss of sight. In the weeks since her diagnosis, Hallie has become completely blind and lost most of her sense of smell. [Has anyone else experienced loss of scent?] Its been heartbreaking... But today is a new day! With the help of our holistic vet TODAY she began Dr. Plechners protocol! I am so hopeful... to get her system healthy and some vision (and nose) restored. We are praying for a Christmas Miracle! We SARDS parents are all in this together, and with each others support we will give our fur babies the healthiest, happiest lives possible!
