Five years ago, Msgr. Peter B. Wells, former associate pastor at Holy Family, was appointed to the post of Assessore of General Affairs for the Vatican’s Office of the Secretary of State. In the late 90s, he began working for the Vatican Diplomatic Corps and soon found himself as the assistant to the nuncio in Nigeria. A few years later, he returned to Rome to serve in a number of roles including overseeing the translation of documents into English, working as an interpreter for heads of state visiting the Holy Father, and organizing several overseas trips for Pope Benedict including the 2008 Apostolic Visit to the U.S. During his time at Holy Family, Monsignor Wells was an energetic and enthusiastic priest. Monsignor James Halpine, rector of the cathedral at that time, affectionately referred to him as The Brat.
