Five years ago, a group of parents of special needs children, founded the Krewe of Angels Mardi Gras Association. The parents wished to give their children the opportunity to participate in Mardi Gras festivities that they would otherwise not get to experience because of their conditions. Membership in this special Krewe is reserved for children who are physically and/or mentally challenged. Each year the Krewe of Angels hosts their annual Mardi Gras Ball, complete with music, food and of course a parade with plenty of throws. Unfortunately, the costs of the event, which is generally around $10,000, is covered by the parents themselves. On Saturday, January 24th, seventeen Troopers from Troop I attended the Krewe of Angels Mardi Gras Ball and parade at the Carencro Community Center. Following the parade, the Louisiana State Trooper’s Association Troop I Affiliate, presented the Krewe of Angels with a check for $5,000 to help cover the costs of the ball. These children truly are an inspiration to their community and models of how to fight through adversity.
