Five years ago my team and I were doing a morning show. I remember it was on brick kilns. A five year old boy worked there as a bonded slave labourer. He was an orphan. His parents owed the factory owner five lacs. His hands and feet were blistered, the hair in his face burnt gold in the sun. We fought so hard to get him out. One day Sadaf Nasim knocked on my door and holding her hand was little Sabir. His muddy face streaked with dried tears. Petrified. Silent. He was with us a few days. Didnt speak much to anyone but Rakae Acha Bacha Hai, who would teach him English and play with him, cuddle our Labby Mango with him. Then i made a decision would change his life, further. I took him to the SOS Lahore. We showed up with his new clothes, bags, stationary and everything he might need. It was my turn to be petrified. I didnt know if I was doing the right thing. It was such a huge responsibility. Within three hours of hanging at his new house, with his new mum at the SOS, being shown his own bed, cupboard, meeting new siblings, he was so much more relaxed than Id ever seem him. Laughing, running around, getting to know the space. Today he is one of the naughtiest kids there. A good student but sports is more his forte. His best friends name is Shazaib. He loves Messi and we will be celebrating his 10th birthday on December 4th! InshAllah. He is my dream boy. My miracle. Sabir is proof to me of the resilience of a childs soul, of how powerful and healing a nurturing environment and an education is. How we MUST all support kids and institutions like the SOS village with donations, time, story telling, music, laughter, a good education, creativity, nurturing and love! I proudly share with you all, my big beautiful happy boy Sabir Jamil, and the angelic lady who raised him, his SOS siblings and friends. Allah bless him with a fantastic future and health always.
