Fixed Telephony Market in Ivory Coast on the Decline According to the figures released by the Ivorian telecom regulator, ARTCI, the landline phone market is showing signs of decline and inconsistency, as its turnover decreased by 15.8% in the third quarter (Q3), compared to Q2 when it rebounded to 19.8% after a slow start of 2014. The report also shows that the market is still dominated by Cote d’Ivoire Telecom (CIT) with a 99.89% market share and Arobase Telecom holding on with a mere 0.11%. However, the country’s Minister of posts and ICTs Bruno Kone Nabagné, was not worried over the decrease, saying that the fixed phone market was doing well and has managed to adjust well to the technological evolution. He was speaking at the 10th edition of the Africa Telecom People (ATP) held in the commercial capital Abidjan. Africa’s mobile explosion seems to have pushed the landline phone market aside, dominating it from head to toe and forcing some fixed operators to rethink their strategies. Some mobile companies have even entered the fixed market to try their luck in what was once a lucrative sector. But an optimistic Nabagné continues to be unfazed by Africa’s fixed market’s loss of steam. “Let’s face it, mobility has limits. We must also switch to the fixed for the best interests of our customers,” he said. Some experts attending the event have called on the continent’s landline phone sector to be revamped to make it more flexible, consistent and productive. Some have suggested the following solutions to ‘repair’ this freefalling industry: prevent the return to monopolies, refurbish the infrastructure through mass investment, create a favourable environment for new players to enter the market and create a trusted digital environment, among others. mobileworldmag/fixed-telephony-market-ivory-coast-decline/
