Flash floods are part of West Virginias history. 125 years ago this evening, a cloudburst hit the area around the junction of Jackson, Wood, and Wirt Counties. Rockport is in this vicinity. The year was 1889. Supposedly, 19 inches of rain fell in over 2 hours. Communities along Tygart, Slate, Tucker, Sandy, and Pond Creeks were washed away. Around 20 citizens were killed. Today, Interstate 77 travels through this vicinity.
