Flashback - November 24, 2010: Prime Minister Dean Barrow rescued the Sugar Industry, providing $ 10 Million Loan from Government, securing another $10 Million, and forging a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding resulting in a dramatic increase in efficiency and productivity in the delivery and processing of Sugar Cane. Here’s what BSCFA Chairman at the time Alfredo Ortega had to say about the rescue and the intervention by Prime Minister Dean Barrow: “I think today is a very historic day for the Sugar Industry… I would like to thank deeply in my heart on behalf of the farmers for the intervention of the Prime Minister and his government to help us rescue the Sugar Industry. Really it is not only the lives of six [thousand] farmers but everyone in the North that depends on the Sugar Industry; and it transcends more to the country of Belize.” In 2015, it is once again the leadership of Prime Minister Dean Barrow that has helped to guide the process towards a fair and mutually beneficial resolution to preserve the Sugar Industry for all stakeholders and for the Nation of Belize. Hopefully, the final outcome will be just as positive.
