Flashback Friday Number 18, 3! No... Now its two Ks to Korumburra & Leongatha!, On an unusually sunny winters day in South Gippsland on the 2nd of May, 1993, Steamrail Victoria organised a triple K Class steam special to Korumburra and Leongatha due to speculation at the time that the line was going to be closed in the coming months, which to an extent, proved to be correct. From Newport to Caulfield, K190-K153-K183 hauled the 11 car consist with an open coal wagon at the rear until disaster struck for K190. As reported in the Newsrail July 1993 edition, K190 had suffered a defective main internal steampipe failure, which would see K153-K183 double header the consist down the South Gippsland line. At Nyora, K183 would be turned so that it could perform push-pull shuttles with K153 between Korumburra and Leongatha. Later on in the day, K183 was seen running solo to Leongatha with a fair portion of the train before it would depart Korumburra with K183 back to Newport. Almost 3 months after this tour on July 25, 1993, K190-K183 would double header to South Gippsland on a cold and wet winter day without K153, which was under overhaul. Included in this post is a video of the steam special that was uploaded to YouTube earlier this year. Images of this tour that have been captured by various photographers will be posted shortly.
