Flashback Friday: Today I see all the great things being done for Deputy Weber from the community in preparation for the ongoing care he will need after he goes home and I am reminded of two instances in my life when the community came together for my family: when our house burned to the ground in 2007 and we lost EVERYTHING except the clothes we were wearing that day, the community joined in support of me and my children to give us food, clothing and emotional support. I was amazed at the way they made sure my son got gifts and a cake for his 10th birthday just 10 days after the fire. My daughter got a shopping spree at a local clothing store. My kids got special quilts. Then, just last year when Eden was hurt VERY BADLY by Shaken Baby Syndrome at the hands of her abuser, just 12 days shy of her first birthday, the community came together again. The birthday cards and gifts from total strangers, the dollar bills put in her birthday cards......these came in from local people who didnt know Eden at all and from people all around this country! I love love love seeing how this small town can unite in the face of a tragedy, I am only sorry that it takes a tragedy to really see it. Lets look at these situations and remember that it doesnt have to take something traumatic happening in order for you to support our community...... Smile at a stranger, pick up a piece of trash on the ground, buy a cup of coffee for a homeless person, donate to the food bank, give blood, pick a name off the tree at Christmas time, ask someone how they are doing, offer advice. Its not that hard and it can impact a person more than you will EVER know! I cannot express how just the smallest gesture can change the mood, the faith, the hope, the outlook, the day or the entire life of the person you touched, even if you dont know you touched them.
