Flashback. Its summer 1973 (or maybe 74) and lm about to walk past Kappys Record World on 181 Street; heading towards the direction pf Woolworths. Two friendly Latino guys who are a few years older than me are standing in front of Kappys. These guys are well into HIGH SCHOOL! One of them smiles at me and comments about what lm holding in my hand and have just begun to eat. THAT looks like a GOOD ice cream! he says. Oh yeah, Man! It IS! I tell him You should get one! Its a little bit expensive, though. 35 cents. (LOL! Today the damn thing would probably cost $3.50 or $4.00!) I got it at that store over there. I tell them, pointing to the bodega that used to be on the same side of the block; before you reach Pinehurst Avenue. Its The Amazing Crunch lce Cream Bar. The wrapper it comes in is primarily light blue. If l remember correctly, its mounted on a tounge depresser; not a popsicle stick. Its the shspe and size of a hockey puck. Vanilla ice cream thats pumped with less air than usual which makes its flavor and texture so rich and creamy; the same way they make Haagen Daas and its dipped in milk chocolate and coated in chopped peanuts. They dont seem to make it anymore, though. The last time l saw it, Muhammad Ali was still boxing and all four Beatles were still alive. Oh, thats too bad!.......Do YOU remember The Amazing Crunch Ice Cream Bar?
