Flattered by your responses to my review of Satkar Restaurant last Sunday, I am tempted to force upon you another this week , But This week , a Restaurant that falls in to a league of its own. “ Peking Tom” A bistro in Malad that serves the so called Oriental cuisine, The Chinese, Thai variety. We have visited this place quite a few times , with Ayee , Shailu Sandeep and family. This is also the place I taught my daughter to use chopsticks. In Fact this is part of the cluster of eateries ….. the Northern Tadka ,the Pop tates , Lemon Grass etc …all different themed, though they share a common kitchen. Over last few years , We Indians have developed affinity to all Chinese, from cheap goods imported from China to our palate, Chinese dishes have become mandatory piece of even our wedding buffets .Even Every restaurant in small places like my Home Town Karwar has “ Gobi Manchurian “ on its menu. 8 out of 10 eateries in Mumbai display a board that says “ Indian, Malvani Punjabi , Chinese” , Really a weird mishmash. Our idea of Chinese food is anything that has liberal amount of Soya ,Chili Sauce, Vinegar and Ajinomoto added to it. Be it Chinese Bhel ,or Chinese daal. Add to it a bunch small eyed waiters from Nepal , Nagaland …….The atmosphere is total Discerning in matters of food and having lived in Sydney for some time I know what authentic Chinese food tastes like , it is bland and most of the time , parboiled …. Not even remotely close to what we consume here. The closest spread that is served here is found at the Kamling near Church gate station that is run by a Chinese family . I am not a admirer of this original thing anyway. The name” Peking Tom” must have surely reminded you “Peeping Tom right” ? Yes, even their Menu has similar cleverly disguised homonyms . su-pah soups , fun tu Starters Dah-Ling desserts “ Mun-Ching “ starters . etc etc…Names apart , food is delicious , My favorites are Chicken Satay with peanut sauce, pepper fried chicken for starters, A variety of sizzlers , Thai red and Green curries in the main course and my daughter just won’t end her meal without having her favorite Sizzling brownie. I found their Thai Red and Green curries, second best only to the “Tamanak thai “of worli. For the beer guzzlers they have Mugs and pitchers , So a blend of booze ,food , ambience draws a lot of young crowd , Hence the overall feel is energizing , The price has been kept reasonable , and I believe it is the USP of this joint. You might even bump into cinema or TV starlets, of course ,. if you manage to recognize them . Overall worth a visit.
