Flemings left hand rule When current is passed through a conductor, it acts as a magnet( as long as current passes through it)and is referred to as, an electro magnet. In scientific research,to study the magnetic properties of a substance in magnetic field, an electro magnet is used because the strength of magnetic field can be increased or decreased by various methods like increasing the current passing through it. John Ambrose Fleming (born in England) is known for inventing the vacuum tube as well as for his thumb rules. When current flows in a wire, and an external magnetic field is applied across that flow, the wire experiences a force(known as Lorentz force because the principle was actually discovered by Hendrik Lorentz ) perpendicular both to magnetic field and to the direction of flow of current ,which forces a conductor placed inside the magnetic field to move.He suggested a simple method to memorise the direction of magnetic field ,current and force. When the forefinger, middle finger and thumb is stretched in mutually perpendicular direction then the forefinger indicates the direction of magnetic field, middle finger - direction of current and the thumb - direction of motion of conductor.
