Flood Recovery Part II - My souvenirs I dreaded todays task, sorting my clothes to determine if each item should be dry cleaned or tossed. It was very hard as almost all the dresses, jackets or skirts is attached to a fond memory. I know some of my souvenirs might seem eccentric but other people save post cards, playbills, photographs, place cards to remember a special event but I saved my clothes. I have the black velvet tunic I wore to my high school commencement over white satin hot pants, deliberately to scandalize the principal - again! (1971). My grey wool gabardine custom tailored, going-away suit and silk blouse from my wedding (1976) and bridal negligee. The organza ensemble from my sisters wedding, the suit I wore as godmother to my nephews christening and the dress from Alexs christening. The royal blue wool dress I wore to meet Lady Diana and Prince Charles holding Alex in my arms, navy silk crepe de chine Albert Nippon dress to meet Prince Edward and the royal blue silk my sister borrowed to meet the Queen. Suits worn to advance Ambassadors and cabinet ministers. Dresses worn to galas and weddings. I remained stoic as I unwrapped and hung up each one to photograph for insurance, but it was so sad to see them drenched and wrinkled. We are fortunate that our photo albums and other priceless mementos were untouched, but these are meaningful to me as they are full of good memories, and I have packed and moved them with me from home to home. Even the snow suit Alex wore to come from the hospital. Each one was carefully chosen for the occasion, none was a frivolous purchase. From a value stand point, I have to determine if I want them dry-cleaned to keep, or throw them out.
