Flood in Bangladesh on Wednesday Description Flash flood engulfed 35 villages in three upazilas of the district yesterday, marooning at least 10,000 people. Locals said the Punarbhaba, Atrai and Kakra rivers marked a sharp rise due to downpour and water overflowing the banks submerged the villages. Of the affected villages, 10 are under Farkabad union and nine in Azimpur union of Biral upazila, five in Dinajpur Sadar upazila, and 11 in Vial and Abdulpur union of Chirirbandar upazila. While visiting Farkabad union under Biral upazila at noon, the affected villagers told this correspondent that water from the Punarbhaba River started entering the villages since morning. Five villages in Sadar and Chirirbandar upazilas have gone under water. The food-hit people have taken shelter on high land and different educational institutions. Md Anwarul Alam, deputy director of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Dinajpur, said at least 10,000 hectares of cropland have gone under water in the three upazilas. In Lalmonirhat, the flood situation in five upazilas of the district has further worsened as fresh areas have gone under water, reports our correspondent. Heavy rain and water from hills across the border flooded several villages in the upazila. According to the sources Water Development Board said Teesta and Dharla were flowing above the danger marks at Dowani point in Hatibandha upazila and at Kolakhawa Ghat point in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila yesterday noon. The flood-hit fresh areas are Bongerbari, Sarkerbari and Bawra villages in Patgram upazila; Goddimari, Dowani, Sindurna, Dawabari and Paruliya villages in Hatibandha upazila; Votmari, Char Kakina, Rudreshewar and Jamirbari villages in Kaliganj upazila; Kadomtola, Balapara and Gobordhan villages in Aditmari upazila; Kurul, Mogholhat, Kulaghat, Bowalmari, Rajpur, Kalmati, Khuniya Gachh, Gokunda, Milon Bazar villages in Lalmonirhat Sadar upazila.
