Flood is over but worse is yet to come Friday, 03 October 2014 Bilal Kuchay The flood waters have receded from almost all the parts of Kashmir valley now but the scars which these waters brought into the lives of millions of Kashmiris are still there. The scars are evident on the streets of Kashmir, in the once busy markets of Srinagar who have not made any business since past a month now, in the apple orchards of Kashmir where tones of apple have rotten below the trees and in the rice fields where people have nothing to harvest this time. The scars are visible in the once thriving localities of Kashmir where thousands of people have today become homeless and have taken refuge either in relief camps or in their relatives’ homes and the scars are visible on the faces of people whose dear ones were lost during the floods. September had just begun and the weatherman had predicted rain. People had no idea what this prediction can turn into, they thought it would be another spell of rain and sun will again shine. Yes, the sun had shined again after a week but till then all the streets in Kashmir have turned into streams, sweet homes into ghost houses, markets into debris and heaps of garbage. In the first week of September early this year, Kashmir saw the worst floods of the century. Young and old had never seen Jhelum so much angry and so much devastating. Its roaring waters have devastated thousands of homes and made lakhs of people homeless. Over 300 precious lives were lost in the floods across Jammu and Kashmir including Shafaat Sidiqui, a photo journalist working for Dainik Jagran. https://m.facebook/Www.Gdckashmirt.net
