Floods hit two Malaybalay villages By Ruby Leonora R. Balistoy MALAYBALAY CITY Bukidnon, Oct. 7 (PIA)—Floodwaters hit this city due to heavy rains late Saturday afternoon, swamping two of its adjoining villages. In a flash report, the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Operations Center (CDRRM-OpCen) received distress calls from residents at around 4:20 p.m that waist-deep floodwaters have pierced in their homes. Immediately, rescuers with rubber boats from Philippine Red Cross and City Disaster Emergency Rescue Volunteers (CDERV) rescued those who were trapped inside their flooded homes, Anatolio Abellanosa of the CDERV said. He said some 300 families in Cabangahan village and 60 families in nearby Aglayan village were evacuated to their respective barangay halls. City Social Welfare and Development Officer Virginia Flores, meanwhile, said sketchy reports from village officials said heavy rains started pouring nearly 4:00 p.m in Aglayan, and in just few minutes, most of the villages’ hubs were already flooded pushing residents to flee from homes and seek refuge in safer places. Based on the rapid “Damage Assessment and Needs Analysis (DANA)” team report, the raging floodwaters fully destroyed 20 houses and partially damaged 28 houses in barangay Cabangahan only. Eight (8) more houses in barangay Aglayan were also in total wreck while the rest were submerged in waist-deep muddy floodwaters. There were no reports of casualties as of press time but Flores said damage to houses, farm animals, and crops are huge. She said the effect was so big that the city’s damage assessment team was not able to cope with the task the day after. Affected families are now temporarily housed in the covered courts at their respective barangays while homeless victims wield efforts to rebuild homes, she said. Likewise, those whose houses were swamped opted to stay at the evacuation centers, neighbors, and relatives while mud was being removed from inside their homes. The city government through CSWD distributed relief goods consisting bed nets, clothing, rice, noodles and sardines to the flood victims. (RLRB/PIA 10-Bukidnon)
